Welcome

Kirby+Headshot+unedited+copy+2.jpg

Thank you for visiting my website. I hope I can be of help to you. With over 35 years of experience, I provide psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy and psychoanalysis to individuals 18 and older to help them recover their emotional and psychological well being. Over the years I’ve learned that both our inside and outside lives are very complex, and there are, at times, periods of deep suffering. I believe that quality therapeutic care can be extremely helpful in finding our way through difficult times.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy provides the opportunity for a deep and steady change in a person’s mind, feelings and experience in the external world. Treatment focuses on the underlying fears and pain that contribute to the individual’s struggles. The therapeutic relationship is guided by a profound respect of each person’s humanity and individuality.

What is Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy?

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy has a number of fundamental assumptions about the human experience:

  • Individuals are governed by both conscious and unconscious processes.

  • Unresolved relationships and experiences from the past are repeated and re-enacted in the present, causing emotional and mental distress.

  • Change requires the individual, along with the dedicated involvement of the psychotherapist, to tolerate uncertainty and move towards the new.

The ability to reach and gain insight into the roots of conflicts, along with an increased capacity to be open to new experience, results in the reduction of symptoms and enrichment of the personality.  Insight involves both an intellectual and emotional shift in one’s sense of self and others. An openness to new experience allows for the possibility to be fully engaged with oneself and with others as we move though our lives.

Areas of Practice

In all cases I will conduct a preliminary assessment interview, discuss findings with you and make recommendations. Together, I’ll work with you to find the best resource for treatment – whether with myself or a referral that may be a better fit.
Psychoanalytically-oriented treatment requires close attention to the patient’s evolution and progress and therefore the frequency and consistency of sessions is important. I have experience providing psychoanalytic treatment in the following areas:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Suicidal thinking

  • Psychosomatic illnesses

  • Emotional disorders

  • Stress

  • Social inhibitions

  • Eating disorders

  • Addictive behaviors

  • Interpersonal relations

  • Family and parental conflicts

  • Professional conflicts

  • Sexual Confusion

  • Trauma
